From the pages of The Still
Before they parted at the end of the path, Jessica turned to her. “I think you’re being too hard on yourself. Tristan’s a good kid… he’s just,” she looked at the gathering clouds, “trying to figure out his place in the world and… sometimes that means he challenges you, but I don’t think that means you’re a bad mom or that he’s a bad kid.”
“Thank you,” Eva said, swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, “but I think you’re the only one who thinks that.”
“I don’t think I am. I think there are more of us than you think who are just trying our best, despite overwhelming odds. Your kids aren’t always perfect, and sometimes they struggle, and you struggle because you care about them, but… you’re not their struggles. They are not their struggles, and the thing you’re struggling with is ginormous. I mean who would have thought that harmless videos about hair and make-up or silly games where you match up shapes could lead to this?” She gestured around at the school, the blocked traffic on the road, and the protestors, and suddenly it did seem rather ridiculous.
